Antibiotics - Substances that can kill bacteria.
Bacteria - Prokaryotic organisms that have a single, circular chromosome and a cell wall.
Binary fission - A method of asexual reproduction in which the bacterial cell divides in two.
Capsule - A mucus-like layer that surrounds some bacteria.
Cell membrane - A structure that controls entry and exit of substances to and from the cell.
Cell wall - A structure made of cellulose that maintains the shape of a bacterial cell.
Colony - A group of microorganisms of the same type.
Cytoplasm - The fluid inside a cell.
Decomposer - An organism that breaks down dead material.
Eukaryote - A type of cell that has a proper nucleus.
Extracellular digestion - Bacteria use this type of digestion. Activity
Flagellum - A whip-like structure that allows a bacterial cell to move.
Incubating - When microorganisms are put in conditions to encourage growth.
Inoculating - When bacteria are put onto an agar plate or broth for culturing.
Microorganisms - Organisms that are usually only visible through a microscope.
Multicellular - A type of organism that consists of more than one cell.
Parasite - A harmful organism that lives in or on another organism.
Prokaryote - A type of cell that doesn’t have a proper nucleus, e.g. bacteria.
Unicellular - A type of organism that consists of only one cell.
